Android: Stupid Zombies

A little concept we’re trying out here — group review where a couple of us give our input on the above subject

Bullets bouncing around the environment hitting the zombies

[John] Stupid Zombies is one of those fun action puzzle games with the twist of using a shotgun to shoot down.. (*drum roll*) zombies! You have a hand full of bullets that bounce against the wall 10 times each, which you use the touch screen of your Android phone to aim and navigate the bullets. Continue reading

RockMelt Review

It’s been about 4 months since the publicly accessible version of RockMelt dropped, and I am just now jumping on the constantly-connected social network bandwagon. RockMelt is a socially-minded browser based on Chromium,  the open source framework that Google Chrome is built on. What makes RockMelt stand apart from Chrome, however, is its Edges – thin portions of the screen which house extremely sleek Facebook and Twitter apps. These Edges are truly unique and powerful, and are solidly integrated into the browser. The functionality they provide likely couldn’t be implemented in a simple Chrome extension.

HOMEFRONT for PC Review

HomefrontHOMEFRONT is a much anticipated First-Person Shooter developed by Kaos Studios and released by THQ for Steam, PS3 and Xbox 360. HOMEFRONT takes place in a not-so-distant future where North Korea gains access to nuclear weapons and becomes a major powerhouse in the Eastern hemisphere, engulfing South Korea and Japan into a Greater Korean Republic (GKR). The GKR eventually invades a fatigued United States and easily crushes the beleaguered US military. From there you are plopped into the shoes of a helicopter pilot by the name of Robert Jacobs. You are saved from internment by two rough-and-tumble resistance fighters who have apparently been tracking you for some time as part of some master plan to deliver a handful of fuel trucks to the US military.

That’s the entire story. Really. Continue reading

AT&T Acquires T-Mobile USA for $39 Billion

So how does it feel guys?

Like a blindsided attack out of nowhere, is how I feel as a TMO customer at the moment. Reading many blogs that entertain my mobile rumor knowledge, I can easily say this caught practically everyone off guard. I’ve spent the past few weeks wondering how a Tmobile x Sprint merger would work with their existing technologies and their plans moving forward, which was more than likely to go the LTE route. Now suddenly on this very beautiful and peaceful Sunday, Americans just lost one more option in this already small-scale sized monopolized battle between the major carriers. As reported earlier by TMOnews, AT&T has shelled out $39 billion USD in a mixture of cash and stocks to acquire TMobile USA from Deutsche Telekom. At the same time, I believe AT&T just made themselves quite the contender to battle Verizon in the 4G LTE era. BBM Alternatives Head-to-Head: Beluga Vs. GroupMe

Blackberry Messenger (BBM for short) has taken the mobile world by storm and introduced another stream of communication for mobile users alongside the standard SMS/MMS+IM+Email. The premise of BBM is to essentially combine these services and allow them to be used with groups of contacts, which is a feature the older services lack entirely. BBM also is unique in that it functions almost entirely over a data connection, meaning you can send SMS/MMS-like messages to your contacts without requiring a texting or even data plan, provided your phone is equipped with Wi-fi.

Beluga Interface

Beluga's interface has a 'Facebook' feel

The most obvious disadvantage of BBM is that it is available only to Blackberry users, who are quickly becoming a minority in the mobile world. Research In Motion have expressed their intent to spread their control of the mobile messaging app environment by bringing a stripped-down version of BBM to Android and iPhone, but this version may be lacking important features of BBM which make it stand out from the various other forms of communication.

Some developers have stepped up the plate to deliver a BBM alternative which functions across all platforms and offers complete functionality to all smartphone users. Continue reading

Movie Review: Summer Wars

My name is Scott and I’m here with my first write up for D&S Digital as well as my first movie review.

Director Mamoru Hosoda, best known for “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time”, has returned with another fascinating movie.

DVD Cover

Taking place in Japan’s near future it seems that nearly every nation has come together to become a part of OZ, an online virtual world that  has been substituting marketplaces, banks, and even weapon defense systems. Kenji attends his classes as well as works part time in maintaining the world of Oz. Keeping the massive world of Oz in tip-top shape requires lots of numerical coding and problem solving which the math genius Kenji loves to do. Speaking of love, what anime movie these days doesn’t have a wee bit of romance?

Bioware Customer Suspended for Criticizing EA

A Bioware community forums user by the name of v_ware was suspended yesterday for posting comments critical of EA, owners of Bioware. The comment in question was “Have you sold your souls to the EA devil?”. This little outburst not only earned him a 72 hour suspension from the Bioware Community Forums, but also prevented him from playing all Bioware-EA games that require online authorization. This means he won’t be able to play Dragon Age 2 for another 2 days, preventing him from enjoying the game at launch.

This situation raises many questions, some of which a Bioware forum moderator attempts to clear up in the thread. V_ware’s ban apparently comes from the EA Community department, which is completely separate from and higher up in the chain of command than the Bioware community staff. This carries some serious Big Brother connotations with it, and also asks, does v_ware have any kind of right to play the game he paid for at the same time as everyone else?

Legally speaking, EA is entirely in the right. We’re all learning these days that most video games are sold under EULA meaning that you are paying to use a game for as long as the owner (in this case EA) allows. This sets a major precedent, however, because if EA can take away v_ware’s game, they can also take away anyone else’s game, if they publicly disagree with EA. Some kind of legislation needs to be brought into place that insures someone’s right to play a video game that they have paid for. I understand that v_ware appears to be a European user, but his case still appears to be a violation of the First Amendment, in most interpretations of the law, as he is being deprived of a product or service that he has rightfully paid for solely on his (some would say) political beliefs.

EA is gonna need to save some serious face on this one.

SF2 Character Select Remix – Very Badass

This isn’t your generic video game .mp3 file being remixed here folks.. What really caught my attention is how this awesome fellow here is using his Madcatz Tournament edition and two custom created boxes full of Sanwa brand Japanese arcade buttons wired up to his midi controller and demonstrates it in action. Being a proud owner of the Madcatz TE joystick and a Street Fighter 2 fanboy, I must share this with the world!

Also check out how he is also able to use his joystick and input specific movesets of characters like Ryu’s hadouken, tatsumaki senpupyaku and shoryuken here! (fireball, hurricane kick and dragon punch for the rest of you)
